What I Learned this week (26/03/2025)

This week, was a very interesting and engaging class as myself as well as the class was focused on different and creative ways data could be visualised in not just an informative way but an interesting and appealing way.

I found it really interesting that certain designs can be made in away that may be misinformative and or biased to a certain recording. What I mean is when Apple portrayed their data collection through a 3D pie chart that made it seem as if their company is more popular and bigger than their competitors by simply making their section stand out more than others.

Expanding upon this, I found it really interesting how pie charts or other forms of visual data can be manipulated to spread in accurate or underwhelming information.

I also really liked this image that was used in our class presentation to show bad ways a chart can be designed to show misinformation.

Another thing I really enjoyed about this class was the different ways diagrams and charts can be made using specific imagery. What I mean by this is during class, we took a look at a Youtube video that showed the casualty count of countries during World War II, this was a very engaging and really cool video showcasing their charts designed to showcase the staggering number of losses per country, representing 1 person for every 1,000 casualties.

Finally, the last portion of this class mostly spoke about and refreshed myself as well as others on what our project 2 is expected to be based around and give us ideas on possible designs. At this stage I had began making the first page for my dashboard, mostly focusing on what my dimensions should be, how many pixels each block should have on their curves, and how my UI selection should be placed.

Below, is a fairly simple yet still detailed first couple of steps on what will eventually be the main page of my dashboard, I made sure all curved edges were 10 pixels on each corner. When designing each block, I based the layout for each on the Swedish poster design, as I had pretty good practice with it in my previous semester as well as I found it really fun doing it this way.

Aside from this, I wanted to use different hues of blue as my main colour palette as its one of the least used colours I've worked with in my previous projects and thought it would be a nice change.
