What I learned this week (13/03/2026)

This week in class, I learned about the effects, impacts and roles of storytelling. An interesting part of the start of this weeks class was seeing how companies create their stories, particularly through advertising and their own websites. Using Apple as an example, where they design their product pages to ‘tell a story’ about that product.

The purpose of creating a story is to create a world based on that story, to show without showing.

I really liked how sound and narratives was also covered, it was explained to help understand that visuals aren’t just the only elements that are required to ‘tell’ a story successfully.

Pausing being used as such a massive example, with such a large impact was really interesting to learn about. Most people (Including myself) don’t normally grasp exactly how much a pause has an effect within story telling. Using the Jaws theme was a great example, using the pause in the music to create suspense for the movie viewers.

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing more to take away.”

Point of attraction was another interesting element of narrative and storytelling, grasping the users attention with once point of interest. An example used in todays class was the girl in the read coat, in the movie’ Schindler's List, where the entirety of the movie was filmed in black and white, all for once small section that featured a young girl wearing an incredibly bright red coat.
