In this weeks class there were many different subjects talked about which had caught my interest beginning with the explanation of ‘Modernism’ within design. I learned a lot this week and how the modernism movement had such a wide spectrum of effects on other eras within design such as architecture, graphic design, illustration, typography and even furniture.
I learned that the modern movement came around in the 20th century within the US, which I believe was surprisingly late within the time span. The movement was known to be a step in the future and was originally influenced by European modernist movements such as Bauhaus and De Stijl. In my opinion, I always seen modernism or ‘modern art’ to today's standards as very minimalist in architecture but also seen as extremely abstract in art pieces.
One of the most recognisable artists and the first that came to my mind that was featured in this movement was Paul Rand. Rand was a graphic designer who was known for his logo designs particularly the logo for IBM (which is my favourite logo to date). Paul Rand ended up in this movement, being influenced by George Switzer and his work. Paul would work through the movement creating his ‘own style’ ‘at his own pace’.
I learned a lot this week under the influence of Modernism within the US. I plan on using what I learned in my future projects in particular the simplicity minimalism within the movement. One of my biggest influences would be Paul Rand and his logo designs, they have always had an influence on me and will continue to do so, I hope and plan on using this movement in the future in a successful style.
