What I learned this week (21/10/2024)

This week I learned further detail about the use of typography, branching off from week 3, which was also revised to remind me of what I learned on how typography could be and should be used in general.

One of the many things I learned this week is how certain typeface should be used and can be used to visually show the effect of a theme. For example using a certain typeface to create a spooky or unsettling theme for a horror book.

Exercise 1

To put what I learned into form I was tasked to create a layout for the synopsis of ‘Frankenstein’ such as creating the hierarchy from the main title, heading, sub-heading, and the paragraphs.

To achieve this I learned that there was another way to make hierarchy within typography. Here I learned how to use a plug in within Figma which would automatically split up the copied texted every time a a person has returned to a new line.

Following this, I would go on to learned about the importance of typefaces that can be used to convey emotions. The next step in the exercise was to select specific keywords that can be found to use to describe the book, more specifically, words that can be used to describe the character of ‘Frankensteins.’ The reason for this step of the task is to help myself choose the best suitable typeface for the rest of the synopsis.

Exercise 2

Putting into everything I learned our next exercise was to create a type scale and typeface layout on the synopsis based on the movie ‘Bladerunner.’ To begin, I first used the plugin to create an even spacing and hierarchy with good spacing.

The next step was looking into the atmosphere of the movie and finding those keywords to help choose a suitable typeface to portray the emotion for that movie. This time, I learned that creating storyboards of similar movies with a similar atmosphere would also help in choosing the correct typeface for the synopsis.

I had many different options to look into but in particular I looked at movies that stuck out to me. For example, a lot of these movies had similar colour schemes swell as font such as reds and blues.

I would go on to to look and choose 5 different fonts using ‘Google Fonts.’ Here I looked into fonts specific to the title of the synopsis whilst keeping into consideration other fonts that can be used for the paragraphs. When choosing I made sure to not only keep it relatable to the theme but also make sure it was readable for the viewers and good at creating hierarchy in the synopsis.

Before finalising my choice of typeface for the synopsis I would go on to create a type scale layout that would be used for building the hierarchy of the synopsis.

I achieved this by creating a line height by the factor of 8 along with a ratio of 1.5.

Finally, I would go on to combine all of these elements that I learned in this class with choosing the type face ‘Lexened.’
