What I learned this week (14/10/2024)

This week, there were many things I learned and found extremely interesting more than others. In today’s class I learned about colour, the use of colour and requirements when using them within design. Breaking everything down piece by piece starting with:

Colour Theory:

Colour Wheel

One of the most memorable parts and easiest to understand of the class was the aspects of the colour wheel. Such as, How it was made, what colours were included and the sub-options to the colour wheel. To begin, I learned that there was more of a difference between RGB and CMYK settings with the fact that RGB when put together creates the colour white. Whereas, CMYK would go on to make the colour black as their colours are lighter than RGB but are mixed with more tones.

Colour Schemes

Moving on from the colour wheel, I learnt today how a colour wheel can be, and preferably should be used to achieve a high and satisfying standard when making a colour scheme within design. Thought this, we went over the different subjects a colour wheel has to offer when making colour schemes and in particular we looked at 3:

Exercise 1

Create an iPhone 16 wireframe within Figma, create 3 versions and with those versions include colour with:

When starting this exercise, I first had to create a basic wireframe using an iPhone 16. In that frame I had to make a greyscale layout of an app. The content was simply copied from the Ulster University website with the purpose of the app to explain what a specific course is about.

When creating this wireframe, my time limit was 10 minutes. Within those 10 minutes I had to visually show the banner, icons and buttons using nothing but black, white, and grey colours.

Another area I had to consider was the Text. When creating this I had to make sure there was a sense of hierarchy and a decent size to specific elements of the wireframe. For example, I made the title the bigger so that people know where they are. Next was the brand size on the top left so that people know what app they are on and of course to show the brand. Finally, the sub heading and text was the smallest as it would be the last area of where people would read.

When creating these designs I had the option to choose any colour I'd like as the base reference for the 3 sub-subjects of the colour wheel. For this, I decided to use the ulster university website blue as the base colour which was HEX 061E42. The reason for this was I really liked the colour and I could utilise it with different secondary colours within the designs.
