This week in class I learned the fundamentals and use of typography within design. I learned about the different types and the terminology of typography such as:
These first set are usually effect the style of font types all of these have a use in some form whether it would be writing for an informal message, sending formal emails. The next set would be the use of cases:
These 3 are used constantly in every day use of typography. Uppercase is usually affiliated with shouting over text or to stand out. Lowercase is affiliated with speaking quietly or in normal texts. Finally, sentence case is the used when writing sentences and paragraphs, where uppcase letters are only used at the start of sentences, after fullstops, names of things, the rest would be typed with lowercase.
The next area I learned about was the use of alignment in typography:
I learned about how these different font layouts are used with the left side being the most commonly known and used as majority of the worlds population would naturally read from left to right on a page. I learned that having text on the right is usually only used for translating for a language that may usually read from right to left such as Hebrew.
I also learned about the use of line spacing and height and how it can be used to create hierarchy along with ending and starting a new paragraph. I also learned about how catastrophic bad space can have on the likes of logos and text making one big word look too similar to another.
My class and I would move on to a small exercise all affiliated with creating equal line spacing with different words and font types. The website we used for this was called ‘Kerntype’. Once completed the site will give you an over all score percentage of how good you are at spaceing, with mines being 82%.
