This week, I learned about the importance, effect and impact illustration has on UI/ UX design. I really found this calls pretty interesting as I understood that illustration could be implemented within UI design, but it was more of how and when it was appropriate to introduce them.
I learnt about how extremely detailed illustrations could also be used for smaller screens to some degree. I also learned that there were different styles an artists would use for those smaller screens, which were a lot more simplified, called vectors.
Following this, we took a look at the evolution of illustrations which began from traditional pencil and paper, to how they are created now with digital illustrations, such as drawings pads, pro create, adobe photoshop etc.
One of the biggest differences from my experiences doing both is that although when converting to digital illustration it can be tough, but upon learning it seems to be more efficient and create more ‘realistic’ results. Comparing this too illustration, although it comes straight to print (just on a page) with more hands on work for a similar result.
Here I compare a digital illustration from the 2009 movie ‘9’ where Tim Burton and Christophe Vacher illustrated a scene from that movie. Although my illustration isn't recent I took a screenshot from this film in about 2021 and illustrated that scene from scratch, this was my third time using a drawing pad.

Christophe Vacher - "9" movie Art Direction, produced by Tim Burton

Christophe Vancher is a painter, art director and concept artist. Vacher is a 2 time Emmy award winner who is renowned for his concept art for several movies such as ‘9’, Transformers prime, Disney’s Tarzan, etc.
What I found extremely interesting when researching into Vacher is that at first I thought his work was entirely digital but in fact they were all just paintings.
Upon class ending, myself as well as everyone else were given the another master and apprentice task to recreate. I decide to choose one of the more complex looking ones to give myself a challenge. I spent about 1 1/2 hour to 2 hours creating this single page from scratch, and learning a good couple of techniques along the way.
Below is the app screenshot I used as a reference when redesigning the page. I decided to choose the image to the left as I thought the swirl over the album cover could give me a decent challenge. As fro the images and title aside from the apps name, I just went with my own as I struggled to find the exact same image across the web.
