What I learned this week (05/02/2025)

This week was sort of an extended recap from what I learnt last week on the development and importance of icons within apps and websites. Here we looked at a couple of different designers that have been known from their iconography and how they have been used.

What my interest to begin with was the iconography used to represent the different games for the Olympics, more specifically the evolution throughout each year and how different designers approached their designs.

It was interesting to note that back in 1936, the icons were fairly simple yet pretty detailed, to grasp what sport is being represented, whereas by 2016 they were simple a stick man on two circles for a bike, yet both years still managed to get their word across in different styles.

Mind mapping for my app

Upon finishing this weeks class, a lot of what I learned was more though my own research, as I was tasked with two things, 1. Refine my icon recreations and 2. look into creating wireframes for my app. I decided to attempt to kill two birds with ones stone, by looking into researching the inspirations for my apps themes.

Destiny research

It may be strange but I decided to look at both the menus and icons for two games, Destiny 2 and Halo Reach. Starting with Destiny 2, I planned on using their menu/map page as heavy inspiration for the menu page to my app, with the solar systems.

I also took a look at the iconography with inside the game at the same time. Sadly, there weren't really any I could use towards my app, but there were some features included that caught my interest. For example, I liked the use of the thin, white circle around some of the icons, as they gave it a really clean look, as well as directing the users attention to inside the circle.

One of the reasons I decided to take a look at destiny for their icons, was mostly hearing the renown the creators collected from how well they were designed. I thought that researching into what was designed and how they were used was extremely helpful, yet sadly I don't believe could be incorporated into my app.
