What I learned this week (30/09/24)

Today there were many different aspects of design that I learned starting with the use of composition and how it can be used in different forms. The example used were simple dots starting with,

Composition

Visual Weight;

The visual weight of an object within design is the term used to make something standout. For example by making one object darker than another or simply increasing its size, creating a hierarchy within that design.

Golden Ration;

Another aspect of today's class I learned about was the golden ration within design, and how important it is. To begin, I originally thought that the golden ratio could only be used through the effect of the swirl form its commonly found within. However, within design it is used as a ‘ratio between two elements.’ In this case it is used to define each element as 1.618 times larger then the previous size.

Fibonacci Sequence;

Instead of dividing a number by 1.618 each time, a faster solution was used known as the ‘Fibonacci Sequence.’ In this case each number is the total sum of the present and previous number added together to then create the next corresponding number (0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144). The fibonacci sequence was by the most interesting part of this class. In my opinion, I believe it’s going to be one of the most used traits within any designs I may work on within the future.

Composition within text

Following the the Fibonacci sequence I also learned today that it can be implemented for the use of font and or text. Using the same format as it would be for the rectangle but instead just text. In this case the bigger text would be used as a header, followed by smaller text into sub headings, then finally paragraphs.

The Rule of Thirds

Today the rule of thirds within design and photography was discussed and what I learned today was the the rule of thirds usually consists of 9 blocks, and 4 intersections. The intersections would be used when something is needed to stand out to grab the attention of the viewer, similarly to the golden ration.


Exercise 1

Create a scale in Figma that show the golden ratio via the Fibonacci Sequence

To create the golden ratio within my design I first created a grid of the ‘Android large’ and used its height as the starting base for the rectangle. Following this, I would then use the Fibonacci Sequence as the base of every other rectangle. Once completed these rectangles would then become the scale of my future Figma exercise.
