What I Learned this week (07/04/2025)

Getting towards the final week of first year this weeks class was pretty short, we spent half this class first discussing where we should be, what we are to expect coming into second year and what our tasks are over summer.

My tutor spent the first half of the class mostly reminding the class as well as myself what this class was about. Branding. Specifically, personal branding, the steps to go through when developing a brand and how we could make it relatable to us, the designers. The elements of creating a brand were covered once more, such as the wordmark/ logo mark, TOV, its goals, its purpose, etc. What I found really helpful and refreshing to Look at were examples of monogram logos for my initials, specifically, AL. Ive always struggled making a monogram logo with these letters, as they don't really balance well at all, luckily the tutor provided a website of an artists that has a goal of creating monogram initials in alphabetical order. This was incredibly useful as it can give me any future ideas if needs be.

Monogram Project

Aside from this, the rest off the class was then spent on further refining our project development, the app, the landing page and, the brand guidelines document. At this point, my app prototype was just about finished, as I had loads of detail and spent the most amount of time working on it.

I decided to chug on with developing my landing page, although I did make a good start I struggled with figuring out what type of content should be included, as well as figuring out the best layout for that content as possible.

Below are the two images of before and after. The first consists of my original design and layout. My tutor was able to provide helpful feedback for me, stating that he really liked the use of colours and that it really matches and uses the brand to its strongest extent. The only things I really had to improve upon were the layout of content, information and buttons.

For example, the ‘sign up’ and ‘login’ buttons were replaced to be inline and not be stacked as it doesn't really function or look too well. Another thing was keeping all call to action buttons and details about the app and their functions separated from the imagery.

At first I didn't really bare this in mind but after making these changes onto my new design it looked a lot more professional, breathable and linear for a user if they were scrolling through the landing page itself.
