What I Learned this week (09/04/2025)

This week was a short informative piece mostly preparing myself as well as the class to get ready for our final critique session of the year next week. This week in class we further explored how information can be designed in a more artistic, engaging, creative yet still informative way.

During the class, there was one example that really caught my eye and what I believed was a very good example of what this presentation was about, what I mean is information gathering of flight paths around the world. This example, covered and tracked each flight, nationally and internationally from start to finish making it look like a bunch of squiggly lines at first glance. I really liked this as it was also giving me ideas for what I could include within my own dashboard during this project.

I couldn't find the correct image but even typing in flight tracker does the same job in a less ‘Artistic’ way but still is very engaging and interesting to look at, as well as being fairly informative.

For the rest of the class, it was mostly spent with receiving any forms of feedback on our dashboards. The class was divided into separate groups with classmates, having the goal to show off our progress and having a look at others whilst providing and receiving feedback. The classmates I collaborated with were, Kaitlin, Paul, and Abigail. I went last when showing off my work, after providing the necessary feedback to the others one at a time.

Comparing my work with theirs at first they found it very daunting due to my work being pretty well ahead in terms of both detail, design and prototyping. I did remind them that I spent hours working on it, knowing what I was going to include from the start, but only completed 3 pages so far, where they had about 5 or so basic wireframes.

When receiving my feedback, they all really liked how I used the images I had when they were placed on my dashboard block, just slightly poking out of their blocks to give them a sort of 3D effect.

Another piece of feedback I got was how consistent everything was. All the blocks were well spaced out from one another, their corner curves were really consistent and just right and, the blocks stood out pretty well from the coloured background.

There weren't many negative comments of my dashboard at all to expand upon, more so just questions that I could look into further. For example, Paul asked if the maps within my dashboard would be interactive to the prototype. I did attempt to make this work but it just was not possible and I spent too much time wasted on making one thing prototype instead decided to expand my skills elsewhere in creating more pages for the dashboard.

Finally, the last form of feedback I received was on my bus page of the dashboard. The group really liked the layout for this page and information displayed. I did ask for an opinion on developing a speedometer type of chart, which tracked distance, time, and or money. They really liked that idea and insisted that it would be included. They also suggested that I could have it when clicked on one of the speedometer, the information switches to a different version. For example, it first displays the time it took to get one place, then when clicked it shows how much it cost.
