What I Learned this week (02/04/2025)

This week was a fairly short class as it mostly explored how charts and diagrams have been designed through the years to better understand how people have viewed and received information. I found it pretty interesting yet pretty recognisable how charts have been designed since then as not much has really changed, although that's not to say there hasn't been any improvements or more creative styles to diagrams.

During the class, I spent most of my time looking through the ‘do’s and don’ts’ of how diagrammatic charts should be designed. Speaking off, this was heavily discussed during the second portion of the class, which in my opinion was the more helpful side.

For example, it was discussed how colour should be used, the spacing between bar charts being at least half the width of each bar. Another portion was spent discussing different variations of charts and diagrams such as full pie charts or ‘donut’ style, etc. Personally, when going through this presentation during this project I never gave it much thought how much depth there is when it came to visualising data and different styles there people could come up with. This was an extremely informative class and what I learned this week well be heavily used again in the future, as well as my current project.

Research- Family tree

When going through this type of data visualisation It sort of reminded me how and when it has been used, specifically could be used in Games, and movies, as well as anything else, specifically I happen to have been watching Harry Potter recently and was showed the ‘Family tree’ scene, which showed the faces of each member on a literal tree image. I found this very interesting as it was a form of visual data collection, portrayed in an engaging way.

I really liked how both easy and engaging it is to look at this family tree, with the design keeping the viewer interested to have a look at each character image, with their name, who it started with and whois part of this specific family.
