What is Point, Line and Plane?

To understand what point, line and plane means, it would be easier to first understand where they can be found. All three elements are the basic terms that are used and found within geometry such as shapes like a triangles. However, in this case, these elements are widely used within design. For example, Point is considered the smallest of the three and is usually used as a mark, in the form of a dot.

Next in line to points would be lines. Lines are used within design to connect elements but only through length not width. Finally, Plane. Planes are known to be the element of which points and lines can be drawn.

To conclude what these elements are and how they are used they can be used in all forms of format both 2 dimensions and 3 dimensions within the likes of shapes, drawings, architecture and even roads.

Who used Point, Line and Plane within design?

Point, line and plane will always be used and found within any form of designs and drawings including simple drawings done by toddlers. As for famous work created by artists there have been a good number who chose to limit themselves to create their work using these elements only.

Wassily Kandinsky: Point, Line and Plane, 1926

An artist by the name of Wassily Kandinsky, who was known for the creation of his abstract paintings always highlights the used of Point, line and Plane. So much so that in the year 1926 Kandinsky would go on to create a book simply titled ‘Point, Line and Plane’ which would explore the meaning and use of these elements within nature, music and of course art.

Ben-day dots

Before diving into my project more specifcally starting with point. I was looking into images related to the use of dots as a technique and remember that a lot of pop art uses dots in their work to create the illusion of different tones and shading within their work. I would look further into this and discover the use of ‘Ben-day dots’ which is the name of that technique. I saved this and thought it would come in useful when I eventually begin to create concepts for my projects.

Exercise One- Point

Task:

Using Figma, for each of the following exercises you should create five Instagram frames each one 1080 x 1080 pixels (px) (as illustrated below). Use the frames as a simple storyboard or animated sequence for the following exercises.

All submissions should be monochromatic, black only. The limitations should be used to push your creativity as much as possible.

Select two of the words below, and for each word, use a row of five frames to communicate the word using nothing but points, dots, and circles. These should be perfect circles with the same width and height, either outlined or solid.
