This week, my lecturer wanted to know about where I stood within my project, and what exactly my idea was for this project. This was the first time I be able to talk about my idea to my lecture and get his opinion on if it works or not.
I was and still am very cautious of how to go about making it considering it’s theme and who my target audience is. Prior to this, I did go around to a good handful of people to just get their opinions from them, ore so confirmation and reassurance than anything.
I explained my idea to the lecturer about how I intend to create an app for children with the aim of educating sexual health and safety. I also said that I aimed to make it more imagery/ icon based due to the age of my audience. I made sure to make it clear that I’m well aware of how my content should be presented as well as what context any text should be wrote, anything that should be age appropriate.
In response, my lecturer really liked the idea, he didn’t seem to find anything wrong with it. However, he did reiterate to me that the way I communicate to the audience will be my biggest factor. He was very understanding when I explained that I plan on using more imagery/ icons, whilst using one of the existing competitors as reference. It seemed to reassure Kyle that I was already aware of how I should go about using and creating content for my app.
Finally, Kyle suggested that it would be easier to focus more on representing safety within sexual health more than anything. As explaining any other topic could be too much or harder to explain to such a young target audience.
I really liked this idea as it takes a lot of my plate but also leaves me with a lot of content to create and include within an app.
Today, I had a quick chat from a couple of people that work with in the edu/ EdTech industry to get some personal opinions and ideas on what my app is like, what direction I should take and any other useful information I could use to help me in my development.
For the most part, they really liked my app idea and were very understanding when I explained to them my worries and cautions to look out for when it came to the content I was developing and what it was about.
They explained that some form of a game within the app is more than likely the best route for me to go. That i should avoid any quizzes as my main feature because children around that age of my audience aren’t too keen or interested in them, outside of school.
They also asked me about the how parents/ guardians would get access or look at their kids progress, or how new users would get onto the app which luckily I already thought of. I explained that the app will require no login to it and that I plan on creating a separate, locked page made specifically for parents/ guardians, to have a look at their kids detail in more depth, as well as manage what they want their kids to look at and learn.
Overall, they were very helpful in terms of feedback and giving me reassurance to me about where my app is aimed and the themes I’m trying to educate about.
Finally, they provided a couple of links and suggested some areas for me to keep in mind and take a look at for developing my app, which is extremely helpful. I really struggled in this area as, of course there wasn’t too many apps or forms that explained or provided content that would be useful or relatable for my app.
